In Search of Lost Ethnicity: Research Problems and Solutions
Abstract
Paper presents the authors’ attempt to combine analytical power of
sociology and statistics in the analysis of "lost ethnicity", which has become
visible through the results of the national Census in Bulgaria in 2011, in which
9.3 percent of Bulgarian citizens have not identify themselves ethnically.
Several hypotheses are formulated with the research solutions related to their
verification resulting solely of the analysis of publicly available data of the
National Statistical Institute. Impossibility of Census’ primary datasets to be
used and therefore more complex and more powerful statistical techniques and
analyses to be implemented is compensated with a variety of more ordinary
methods which however show their heuristic potential in the course of the
analysis.
The main conclusions of the paper are that there is no single logic, which
affects non-response to the question of ethnicity and there exist, intertwine and
interact many substantially diverse social logics. Significant non-response share
is a result of the sole or joint action of several factors, some of which are
analytically identified as such: problems with self-identification of certain
groups/communities (primarily those whose ethno-cultural specificity has local
detachment); regional administrative specifics; type of settlement.
Conclusions of the analysis lead to the formulation of some potential practical
implications of the achieved to date knowledge of the factors of lost ethnic
identification.
