Estimating mediation effects using AMOS on SPSS
Abstract
This paper has a methodological character, related to the teaching of students, including doctoral students on research methods. It aims at encourages students and doctoral students to use Amos software of the SPSS in their scientific work. In this regards the paper presents some basic characteristics of Amos that is used to evaluate structural equation models (SEM). In difference to the multiple regression, the SEM allow to have more than one dependent variable, as well as to evaluate mediation and moderation relationships. The paper shows shortly the Amos interface and the main tools used to draw graphical structural equation models. From the types of analyses with Amos the focus is on the mediations and moderation effects. Particularly, the mediation effects are shown on an example of a real study. It is demonstrated that the model with mediation provides more realistic and better results compared to the multiple regression model without mediation. Thus, the paper could stimulate students and doctoral students to start using Amos to create and evaluate more complex SEM.
