BORDER REGIONS IN SOUTHEASTERN EUROPE
Abstract
This article is devoted to opportunities for regional development of border regions in Southeastern Europe and in particular the relationship between Bulgaria with Greece and Romania, which determine the formation of cross-border cooperation. Moreover, these Euro-regions are formed through sub-regional cooperation, which contributes to the development of economic and social cohesion of cross-border geographical areas, including administrative-territorial units of neighboring countries, EU members and non-members. In this case, we will consider the connectivity of Bulgaria with Turkey, Serbia and North Macedonia. It is assessed that cooperation within this framework consists in creating direct and permanent links between regions and communities on both sides of the state borders, by virtue of the competences of local authorities and in accordance with national legislation. It is important that cross-border development will lead to increased trust and tolerance, understanding and good neighborly relations. Improving the efficiency and capacity for providing services to citizens by unifying public and private facilities and services on both sides of the borders. Coordination of policies of mutual interest, such as those in the field of regional planning, urban and rural development, flood protection and others.
